So, what’s that amazing Greek spot we’re talking about? Keep reading to find out.
Finding an Ugly Sunset in Mykonos, Greece, Is Impossible, But Some Places Offer Better Views Than Others
When you come to Greece, it’s safe to say that you will watch some fantastic sunsets, whichever Greek travel destination you choose. Still, if it happens to be Mykonos, then you know you’re in for a real treat.
Visiting Mykonos is exciting for many reasons, but one of the common joys of this Greek island people overlook is watching the sun set on the horizon. Hopefully, you will find time to just stand still, relax, and soak in the view. But how to choose among the many lovely spots on this island? We might be able to help you.
If You Had to Pick Just One Spot to Enjoy the View From, We’d Say This One Is the Winner – Armenistis Lighthouse
This important part of recent Greek and Myconian history, Armenistis Lighthouse, was built in 1891, and it is still fully operational. As an important landmark that’s been guarding the coast of this Greek island for decades, Armenistis is a place not to be missed, especially because it offers unique sunsets you won’t find elsewhere.
It overlooks the sea and the nearby Tinos island, giving you the feeling that you’ve just stepped into Greece from another time. It’s certainly different from what we’re used to seeing on Mykonos – it’s simple yet powerful.
This is one of those places that are romantic regardless of the time of day and how low the sun is on the horizon. If you’re on a Mykonos honeymoon or planning to propose, don’t miss out on this experience – it’s the perfect setting.
Here’s How to Get to This Place and Catch the Sunset That Will Leave You Breathless
Armenistis Lighthouse is located in the Fanari area of the island, about 6.5 km north of Mykonos town (Chora), which means you can quickly get there after the day spent in town and watch the moment when the day turns into night. It will only take you about 15 minutes from Chora by car. Take the road to Agios Stefanos, and you’ll be there in no time. However, remember that you need a car rental for this little travel experience.
A Little Bit About Armenistis Lighthouse History That You Should Know
The idea to build a lighthouse in this part of the island was inspired by the sinking of the British steamship Volta in 1887, when 11 people lost their lives in the accident. This marvelous 19m-high lighthouse was born as a preventative measure to ensure nothing like this happens again.
The original mechanism that provided light (which was awarded at the International Exhibition in Paris in its time) was operational until 1983 when the electrical equipment was finally installed. If you’re interested to see the original mechanism, it’s currently in the Aegean Maritime Museum in Chora.
There Are a Few Other Places That Deserve the Title of the Best Sunset Spot in Mykonos
Of course, Armenistis is just one of countless spots where you can rest your eyes and watch the sun when it’s low in the sky. As you can probably imagine, every single beach here is a lovely place where you can watch sunsets. You can sit in a beach bar, grab a cocktail, and let go of all your worries. Isn’t life beautiful?
However, it’s obvious that the beach on the west coast will beat the one on the east coast. If you want our advice on which beautiful beaches to put on your travel itinerary for catching sunsets, we’d say you should visit these:
- Agios Stefanos,
- Megali Ammos,
- Kapari,
- Houlakia,
- Agios Ioannis.
Enrich Your Travel Experience – Mykonos Town Offers Plenty of Excellent Places for Catching a Sunset, Just Like Any Beach
Who says that the beach is the only part of the coast that will impress you with sunsets? Chora is located on the western coast, which means the sunsets here are magical. Don’t miss out on visiting Little Venice and the windmills – they are close to each other, so it doesn’t make much difference which of the two spots you choose. The views are marvelous, you’ll see.
If you wish to enjoy a relaxing evening with drinks in a bar but still manage to see that sunset everyone dreams about, you should check out 180 Degrees Sunset Bar. As it’s obvious by the name, the sunsets here won’t disappoint you.
